About Martin Marietta and the Aggregates Industry
Martin Marietta is the nation’s second largest producer of construction aggregates, a leading producer of magnesia-based chemical products and is developing structural composites products for use in a variety of industries.  Martin Marietta Materials supplies the crushed stone, sand and gravel used to build the roads, sidewalks and foundations on which we live.  Martin Marietta has more than 300 quarries and distribution facilities in 28 states, the Bahamas and Nova Scotia.  The company’s strength lies in its strategic locations, competitive pricing and dedicated employees who are committed to quality products and superior customer service.  Martin Marietta was named one of FORTUNE magazine’s “America’s Most Admired Companies” in 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2004.  In 2006, Martin Marietta won six national Environmental Excellence Awards from the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association, which provides national recognition for aggregate producers that meet and exceed environmental and regulatory requirements.

Through our Southwest Division based in San Antonio, Martin Marietta provides Texas with less expensive construction materials for regional public and private projects such as residential neighborhoods, roads and highways, schools and businesses.  Our historic Beckmann Quarry, located on the northwest edge of San Antonio, is one of the largest aggregate mines in Texas.  This site opened prior to the 1930s and has continuously been operated and expanded to meet the region’s growing demand for high quality building materials.
As an industry, there are more than 10,000 aggregate mining sites nationwide supporting a workforce of nearly 120,000 men and women.  Every $1 million in aggregate sales creates 19.5 jobs, and every dollar of industry output returns $1.58 to the economy.  The production of aggregates contributes nearly $40 billion to the GDP of the United States every year.  Proximity to market is critical because of high transportation costs, which is why 70 percent of our nation's counties include an aggregates operation.  Texas leads the nation in the production of crushed stone.
